The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit -
(1882)
This is the first Sargent creation that I saw in
person. The nearly eight foot square image fused itself instantly into
my visual memory. It is a wondrous enigma.
As a "portrait" it breaks all the rules of portraiture; it is square,
the subjects are dispersed and two of the girls are almost obscured in
shadow, though as a subject painting it transcends portraiture. Is it an
evocation of childhood? Does it depict the stages of feminine youth? Do
the shadows portend the sisters unknown future? Why is the work called
the "Daughters of Edward Darley Boit? Where is their mother? When the
children presented the painting to the MOFA in 1919, it was in memory of
their father only. Why? Whatever the answers may be, it remains a
beautiful paradox.
